Everything you ever wanted to know about... millenials

If you're not a milliennal like me - you're probably sick to death of hearing about them! How entitled they are, how they expect a flat organisational structure, etc etc!

Simon Sinek did a now famous video interview (which you can probably still find on YouTube) about millennials. This article shares a Q&A format on the same subject.

My personal view is that people are people - and we all have our generational flavours... but you can't 'box' people in... there will always be 'outliers'. I have two millennial daughters and I can say I don't see some of the typical attributes millennials are supposed to have in either of them. They are, in my opinion, well rounded young women who want to make a contribution to society - they don't feel entitled - they have worked damn hard to get where they have got to - but they do expect equality in how they are treated.

I think one of the absolute outstanding qualities of the millennial generation is their failure mentality - that is - do it fail - and fail fast - try again. The best example of this was our recent Americas Cup win - where Peter Burling failed more than once at the beginning, even losing both races to Oracle in the Louis Vuitton Cup. I remember feeling quite frustrated because he was supposed to 'better' than Dean Barker. Well I have kind of had to eat my words... because what Peter Burling did was fail fast and learn fast from those mistakes, which he never repeated again! That sums up the millennial mindset and I'm not afraid to admit that its a bit different from my own generational perspective where you don't fail!

I also think the way of the world is moving more towards the millennial mindset - and if they're driving that then so bet it - we do get learn from our kids - and we should never stop learning and growing. Our workplaces will be a whole lot better with some millennial perspective which promotes empowerment, social responsibility and a let's try it and see if it works approach!
